Combining Agri-Environment Schemes For Environmental And Financial Benefit - Tir Gofal And Organic Farming Organic Eprints
John, Will; Davies, Peter.
Peter Davies farms 750 acres in the Vale of Glamorgan. He has a suckler herd and sheep, with arable crops for sale off the farm and for livestock feed. The farm began conversion in 1999 and most of it will finish in 2001. It was accepted into the Tir Gofal whole farm agri-environment scheme in 2000. In this interview with Will John he explains how the two schemes work together. He has researched and planned the changes carefully and expects his farm enterprise to benefit in the long term.

Farm Auditing for Sustainability Organic Eprints
Measures, Mark.
Policy makers have now established sustainability as the new aim for UK farming. The development of the Farm Audit for Sustainability involved identifying the objectives of sustainable farming, based on the Principles of organic farming as set out by the International Federation of Organic Farming Movements (IFOAM) and establishment of indicators to assess the effectiveness of individual farms in meeting these objectives. On-farm use of the Farm Audit demonstrated that the tool was able to provide a comprehensive assessment of sustainability of the farming system and that it is an information and advisory tool which is potentially useful in benchmarking and development of the farming operation.

Informations- und Datenmanagement am Beispiel einer Langzeitstudie zum Ökologischen Landbau (“Hof Ritzerau”, Norddeutschland) Organic Eprints
Hoernes, Ursula; Roweck, Hartmut.
Scientists from various disciplines and different research institutes form the interdisciplinary project “Hof Ritzerau” (Ritzerau, Northern Germany) focussing on the effects of organic farming on animals, plants, crop production, crop diseases, soils and economics. Due to the longterm runtime and to the multidisciplinarity a consequent and consistent management of data and information is developed on the basis of Open Source software. Two core elements of this web-based scientific information system are presented here - a metadata server (GeoNetwork) and a map server (UMN Map-server). Conclusions: The importance of professional management of data, information and knowledge can hardly be underestimated. For developing the infrastructure and specific...

Study on Input/Output Accounting Systems on EU agricultural holdings Organic Eprints
Goodlass, G.; Halberg, N.; Verschuur, G.W.; Hanegraff, M.C..
Of 241 questionnaires sent out to 20 countries 55 completed forms were returned. No information could be obtained about systems in Portugal or the USA. The subject of nutrients was covered by 91% of systems, pesticides 38%, energy 29% and other subjects including wastes 44%. Nearly half of the systems covered more than one subject, the most common single subject system was nutrients. The arable sector was covered most often by the systems (76%), with dairy (62%) and pig (56%) the most prominent of the livestock sectors. The respondents judged that 65% of systems were at least moderately effective in improving the ratio of inputs to outputs. The highest levels of ratio reduction tended to occur with systems which included the livestock sectors or...
